Step by Step Guide for Install Sliding Closet Doors

Guide for Install Sliding Closet Doors

This guide will walk you through the entire process of installing sliding closet doors, from preparation to finishing touches.

Step 1: Remove the Old Bifold Doors

In this guide, we are  going to replace the bifold doors with sliding doors. If you’ve ever had bifold doors in your house, you’ll know they’re not the best option. We have used them before, and in some situations, they work, but in this case, we’re replacing them with sliders.

Bifold doors have their flaws, and over time, they tend to fall off due to broken handles or missing pieces, which is very typical. The first step is to remove these doors. You want to have the door half open, and then loosen the screw. Once that’s done, you can close the door, and it’ll come right out.

Step 2: Measure for New Sliding Doors

Before removing all the hardware, we recommend getting the new doors and hardware to make sure everything fits and works before you throw anything away. So, now we measured the opening, and it’s 47 inches wide. That’s perfect because we will get two 24-inch doors. The height is about 80 and a half inches, so 2, 24-inch by 80-inch doors should fit. After that, get the sliding kit, and since the framing is already in place, the transition will be smooth.

Step 3: Remove the Old Hardware

Now, take down all the old hardware and track. The process is simple. For these doors, we have two 24-inch by 80-inch six-panel doors, but you can choose any design you like. The sliding door hardware kit includes everything you need: the track, rollers, the guide piece for the bottom, the knobs, and screws.

Step 4: Prepare the New Doors

Next, install the rollers onto the doors. The rollers are offset, so we need to ensure we are using the same kind of rollers on both doors. Be mindful of scuff marks on the doors, so they’ll be on the inside, which won’t be visible. We ll measure an inch and a quarter from each side, and that’s where you should attach the rollers.

Step 5: Install the Track

Once the rollers are in place, install the track. The track is installed by holding it up and marking the placement. After that, make sure everything is lined up and secure. Also make sure the door fits properly in the track, and you might need to adjust the height to get it right.

Step 6: Install the Doors

With the track installed, it’s time to hang the doors. We’ll lift them onto the track, making sure the rollers fit securely into place. Also check that the door is moving smoothly along the track.

Step 7: Adjust the Doors

The next step involves adjusting the doors. If there’s a gap at the bottom or top, we’ll tweak the rollers until the doors sit evenly. It’s important to get the alignment just right so the doors open and close smoothly.

Step 8: Cut the Doors if Necessary

If the doors don’t fit perfectly, you may need to trim them. If needed, carefully measure and cut the doors to make sure they fit the opening. The goal is to avoid cutting them unless absolutely necessary, but sometimes a small adjustment is needed.

Step 9: Install the Door Pulls

Once the doors are adjusted, install the pull knobs. Measure and mark the center of each door for accurate placement of the pulls. It’s important to get the measurements right so the knobs look aligned and professional.

Step 10: Final Adjustments and Finishing

Finally, our team will add some finishing touches. We’ll caulk the nail holes and give the whole installation a clean look. The doors are now ready, and they should work smoothly for years to come. The process isn’t difficult, but it does require a bit of attention to detail to make sure everything fits and functions properly.
